Hints:
A. -General Tips-
1. On rough terrain (sand, grass, the backwards escalator on Coconut Mall, etc.), keep hopping while approaching the normal terrain. It’s faster than just accelerating.
2. When you get hit with an item, or spin out for any other reason, use a mushroom, hit a boost pad, or (after gaining a bit of speed) do a trick. The resulting boost of speed from any of these will be higher than your kart’s max speed. When you decelerate, your speed will remain at that kart’s top speed.
3. When sliding and obtaining mini-turbos, don’t be afraid to take ramps and do tricks. You don’t even have to use your mini-turbo before the ramp. When you land from the trick, you’ll still be sliding with your wheels still sparking (meaning that you have your mini-turbo). Just make sure you hold the slide button when you’re hitting the ground.
4. Hug the inside corner of turns. Just like in real life, where tracks must compensate for the lesser distance around the inside part of a turn, it’s faster.
5. When sliding around a turn, try your absolute best to stay on the road. The moment you touch that offroad part of the track, you’re going to get ‘sucked in’ to it. This may seem like a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people online I see sliding into the offroad.
6. When you are being dropped by Lakitu back on to the track, press the accelerate button as soon as you touch the ground for a boost.
B. -Kart-Specific Tips-
1. Multiple blue (lesser) mini-turbos are better than few red (greater) mini-turbos.
This means that you should ALWAYS let a blue boost rip as soon as you get it,
and then immediately start on your next blue mini-turbo as soon as possible. Try
to get as many blues in one turn as you can.
2. Slide whenever you get the chance. Snaking may have been dumbed down
since the last installment of Mario Kart, but it is still a formidable technique,
especially in karts.

C. -Motorcycle-Specific Tips-
1. When using a motorcycle, try to wheelie as much as possible. Even if you only
have a split second to do it. Doing this over the entire 3 laps will surprise you. It
will shave off countless precious seconds.
2. When you turn while doing a wheelie, you will not go quite as fast as going
perfectly straight. Be aware of this when starting your wheelie, and make sure
you adjust, and move towards the inner part of the next turn in a straight line
while in the wheelie.
3. Hopping is the quickest way to cancel wheelies. With this easy technique,
you’ll be able to wheelie for just a split second, and then adjust to dodge an
incoming item/player.
4. If you hit someone while in a wheelie, you’ll lose a lot of speed. Try not to do
this!
5. When starting off, if you can, start to wheelie. This is especially useful if you
start in the first-place position.
6. When on a long straightaway or you have plenty of time to complete a wheelie
and start another, keep pressing the wheelie button. This way, as soon as your wheelie ends, you’ll start another. This may not seem like much, but it may save
a few seconds, which are precious in Mario Kart.
7. When sliding, try to get as many mini-turbos as possible rather than continuing
the same slide for the entire turn.

D. -Item Tips-
1. Items that increase your max speed (Mushrooms of all kinds, Stars, and Lightning Clouds to name a few) are best used to clear offroad areas. Don’t use
them in straightaways. Instead, save them to cut across the grass on the side of a turn. An obvious example of this is behind the Chain-Chomp in Mario Circuit, where there is even a ramp to trick off of.
2. The Lightning Cloud item gives you a speed boost before you get shocked. If possible, delay hitting someone (successfully passing it on to them) as long as possible to maximize your boost. Don’t delay it too long, or you’ll get shocked!
3.When in first and you see a Blue Shell warning on your screen, use whatever items you have in the best way you can. You’re just going to drop them when you get hit by the Blue Shell anyway.
4. When a Pow Block warning appears, get ready. Whether you’re in a kart, or a
motorcycle, there’s a way to ‘dodge’ them! You need to time the wheelie button (doesn’t matter what vehicle type you’re in) at just the right moment on the 3rd ‘BOOM’ of the warning. This is easily achieved by just spamming the button/wiggling the wheel. When successful, you will do a 360 degree turn and keep going with the same momentum you had before the Pow Block.
5. When in first, or a significant position in a race, keep a Banana or a Shell behind you while racing. Any Green or Red Shells will be blocked by them. This does not work with Fake ? Boxes.
6. Useful places to put a Banana/Fake ? Box include on boost pads, inside of Normal ? Blocks, on jumps, on the inside of a corner, next to several other Bananas/Fake ? Boxes, on wobbly/bumpy terrain, or directly after the landing of a jump.
7. The farther your place is towards the back, the better your items. A person in 7th place will get better items than the player in 1st. Use this to your advantage and slow down just a bit to let a player in front of you that is very close to you when approaching ? Blocks.
8. Though it is very difficult, Blue Shells can be dodged with a well timed Mushroom.

E. -Individual Stage/Mode/Character Tips-
1. In Grand Prix modes, it is helpful to pick a kart/motorcycle with
medium to high acceleration. You will get hit (A LOT) in Grand Prix, and
having a high acceleration will help you quickly get back up to your top
speed.
2. In time trials, use a heavy character on the Flame Runner (or Bowser Bike
if you have the European/Australian version of the game). You do not need
acceleration because you (shouldn’t) get hit on a time trial. Speed should take
precedence over acceleration in Time Trials. Funky Kong makes
a really good choice for a Time Trial character, since he has +2 Speed.
3. Dry Bowser makes a really good character to use in karts, due to his stat bonuses.
4. On certain stages (Maple Treeway and Koopa Cape to name a couple),
it is faster to slide/mini-turbo around those curves with ramps/boosts on the sides.
5. The lighter the character, the more offroading ability he/she has. If playing
as a light character, depending on your kart/bike’s offroad stat, it may be wise
to take those shortcuts that force you to go offroad/slow you down.
6. On stages that have ‘wobbly’ (for lack of a better word) areas in them
(Bowser’s Castle-Wii and Rainbow Road to name a couple), keep pressing the trick button/wiggling the wheel. You’ll do tricks in quick succession, gaining
speed.
7. A lot goes into the judging of your Grand Prix. Overall time, number of falls, placing, and apparently, even the number of tricks you do all come into play.
