how does a wiimote connect to a computer?

I’ve looked around and gotten some information, but not enough. I just assumed I’d be buying some kind of home soldered infrared dongle that tricks the remote into thinking the computer is a wii. But then I read it connects via bluetooth, which explains the godlike range of the button presses (godlike when i thought it was purely IR) but my question is, when you sync the wiimote to the computer over bluetooth, how does the computer know which direction it’s pointing? do I still need a sensor bar adapter?

You need to put a sensor bar over your display if you want the wiimote to determine direction. You can adapt the Wii sensor bar to get power from a USB port or you can just use any two sources of infrared light (such as two LEDs).
